Abstract

Eoeun Oh Guk-heon was a scholar who chose a life not pursuing public office due to the invasion of the Qing Dynasty. He was born in Jinsan, Jeolla-do Province and lived in Gongju, Chungcheong-do Province. At the age of 25, he continued his studies by joining Sagye Kim Jang-saeng in Yeonsan, Chungcheong Province. He maintained friendly relationships with writers from Chungcheong Province, including Song Si-yeol and Song Jun-gil. He always remembered his anger against the Qing Dynasty's invasion and did not forget the Ming Dynasty's help. He lived in seclusion in Danseong, Gyeongsang-do Province and tried to maintain his spirit of loyalty to the end. In this paper, we consider his loyalty to the Ming Dynasty as important and examine his secluded life based on this ideology. For this purpose, we first looked at Oh Guk-heon's collection of works currently in collection, and revealed his thoughts on loyalty and seclusion in the works contained in the collection. While living in seclusion, Oh Guk-heon did not just lead a leisurely life of touring mountains and rivers. He always devoted himself to academic activities and tried to seek the Tao. Because of his appearance, people around him and later generations called him ‘Daemyeongcheosa’. Due to the humiliation he suffered at the hands of the Qing Dynasty, he had no reason to hold a government position, and he did not seek public fame but only tried to maintain loyalty. Because Oh Guk-heon was mainly active in Danseong, Gyeongsang-do Province in his later years, it was not easy to find places or relics directly related to the princess. However, he clearly solidified his academic foundation while working in Chungcheong-do Province and Gongju, and continued to form friendly relationships with literary figures who could represent his time. There is a need to pay more attention to Oh Guk-heon's practice of scholarship, ideology, and learning beyond the boundaries of the region.
