이 글은 학력주의를 사회 정의 관점에서 재평가하려는 시도이다. 학력주의는 학력이라는 기준을 통해 희소한 지위에 대한 접근을 배제하거나 통제하면서도 이러한 배제나 통제를 정당화하는 이데올로기로 기능한다. 그러므로 학력주의가지배하는 사회에서, 학력 과잉의 문제나 학력과 능력의 불일치는 거의 필연에 가깝다. 게다가 학력주의는 능력에 따른 불평등을 정당화할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라자연적·사회적 운에서 비롯된 불평등 또한 능력에 따른 불평등이라는 이유로 정당화할 위험성을 안고 있다. 자연적 우연에서 비롯된 불평등 문제는 롤즈의 차등원칙으로 부분적으로나마 해결될 수 있다고 해도, 사회적 우연에서 비롯된 불평등 문제는 이 원칙으로 해결되기 어렵다. 후자의 불평등은 계급·계층 간 격차를야기함으로써 기회의 평등 조건까지 약화시킨다는 점에서, 이 문제를 해결하기위해서는 학력주의를 극복하기 위한 교육 개혁 정책은 물론 적절한 소득 재분배정책이 요구된다.
Abstract
This article is to reevaluate credentialism in terms of a social justice point of view. While credentialism excludes or controls the access to rare posiitions through credentials, it serves as an ideology that justifies such exclusion and control. Therefore, in a society dominated by credentialism, the problems of over-education or mismatch between credentials and ability are almost inevitable. Moreover, credentialism not only justifies inequality based on ability, but also it is easy to justify inequality due to natural and social luck on the ground of inequality based on ability. Although inequalities arising from natural luck can be solved in part by Rawls’ principle of difference, inequalities arising from social luck can not be solved by this principle. The latter inequalities weaken the equality of opportunity by causing gaps between classes, and education reform policies and an appropriate income redistribution policy is required to solve this problem.
