Abstract

This Study examines whether and how personal and household attributes of married men and women affect their social status identification, by drawing on the KLIPS data. Our study identifies that economic household conditions are very significant in determining subjective status identification of married men and women. Secondly, in light that the unemployed husband’s social status is influenced by the employed wive’s personal attributes, the employment status is a crucial factor to affect the status consciousness of married men and women, rejecting the existing gender-specific perspective. Thirdly, the high education of unemployed husbands and their wives’ high incomes lead them to have an attitude of shame and dispossession, which sheds light on the effect of “reverse borrowing.” Fourth, the non-regular employment status, which symbolizes the discrimination and poor working conditions in the context of Korean labor markets, have a negative impact on the social status identification of married men and women. Moreover, married men whose age is in the 40s and 50s have lower status identification, whereas married women who are over 60 years old show higher status positioning.
