Abstract
Humans frequently encounter numerous conflict situations, i.e. ambivalence. Ambivalence means a state of mind in which one feels diametrical emotions for the identical object simultaneously. In general, ambivalence causes a high conflict, and has a tendency of leading to reaction formation, which is one of defense mechanisms of a human. This study aims to induce the two extreme ideas when a designer cannot find a direction between values compatible with each other upon applying a human mentality, ambivalence, to the product design process, and to seek out a possibility of finding an optimal mediation point from such process. Thus, a case study has been carried out in order to investigate whether ambivalence is an effective helpful element in the design process for 4th year students who were preparing their individual graduation work project. Students showed a tendency of experiencing confusion and conflict while crashing into ambivalence that existed in the inner side of each individual at the conceptualization stage, and experimental and extreme inclinations were caused by reaction formation and the amplification of reaction at the stage of expression of shapes. However, at the finishing stage, the results reflecting one’s individuality could be derived by sublimating values conflicting each other to the advantages through the mediation process by the external pressure. Even though the creation of a conflict situation by ambivalence appeared as contradictory concepts and exaggerated images, we expect that actively utilizing psychological expressions of ambivalence, rather than forcefully limiting them, will be very useful in implementing a more creative design.
