1980년대에 제니 홀저(Jenny Holzer)는 불특정 다수를 대상으로 하는 열린 공간에서 텍스트를 미술의 제재로 삼는 작업을 통해 작가적 경력을 구축했다. 언어를 베이스로 하는 홀저의 ‘텍스트 미술’은 그간 텍스트의 의미론을 중심으로 많이 연구되어 왔으나, 그 형식적, 조형적 특징에 대한 연구는 부족했다. 홀저 미술은 전통적인 전시공간인 화이트 큐브를 벗어나 이루어진 장소성, 텍스트의 사회 개입적 주제, 아날로그와 디지털의 다양한 매체를 통해 텍스트를 표출하는 광범위한 매체의 전용과 선점, 또한 그를 통해 나타나는 매체 기반 적 타이포그래피를 미술적 특징으로 한다. 특히, 2000년대 이후 홀저의 미술은 텍스트를 콘텐츠로 하면서도 설치와 퍼포먼스, 그리고 회화 등의 세 영역에서 매체의 창조적 활용을 통한 조형적 작업을 선보이고 있다. 홀저의 텍스트 작업은 LED사인의 조각적, 공간적 구축을 통해 타이포그래픽 오브제로, 제논 프로젝션에 의한 빛의 퍼포먼스를 통해 새로운 공간적 타이포그래피로, 또한 전쟁 기밀 문서의 편집을 통해 추상회화의 형식으로 요약된다. 홀저의 작품에서는 매체 기반 적인 타이포그래피를 통해 텍스트가 조형적 구축물의 일부로 또한 조형적 수단으로 활용되는 특성을 보여준다.
Abstract
Jenny Holzer built her career as an artist in 1980s through the work making texts subject matter in open spaces for those unspecified. Holzer’s ‘text art’ in the basis of language has been studied a lot centered on texts’ semantics, however studies on formal, plastic traits have been short. Holzer’s arts are characterized by sense of space made deviating from the white cube, the typical exhibition space, texts’ subjects intervening in society, exclusive use and preoccupancy of wide range of media exposing texts through various analogue and digital media, and media based typography appearing through those as well. Especially since 2000, Holzer’s art has made texts contents all the while but it has showed plastic works through creative utilization of media in three realms such as installation, performance and paint. Holzer’s text works are given an overview as typographic object through building sculptural, spatial LED sign, as new spatial typography through performance of light by Zenon projection and as forms of abstract painting through editing of confidential document of war as well. Holzer’s works show traits that texts are utilized as part of plastic structures and plastic means as well through media based typography.
