현대예술장신구는 다른 예술매체처럼 주제와 그 표현방법이 작품에서 가장 중요한 요소로 작용하는 분야이다. 작가의 다양한 의도를 위해 수많은 형태, 재료 및 기법에 대한 실험이 이어져 왔으며, 그 중 사진 이미지의 활용은 사진이 가진 객관성과 서술성, 그리고 누구나 쉽게 알아볼 수 있는 대중성을 담보해 줌으로써 작가가 목표로 하는 내러티브를 공고히 하고 커뮤니케이션에 효과적으로 작용한다. 본 연구는 사진이 처음 장신구에 등장한 역사를 조사하고, 현대예술장신구에서는 초기 사진 장신구와는 어떻게 다른 의도들로 사진이 이용되는지 살펴봄으로써 표현매체로서의 예술장신구를 고찰하는데 그 목적이 있다. 19세기 중반 처음 사진이 활용된 장신구는 20세기에 들어 사진의 대중화로 인해 특별한 의미를 잃고 역사 속으로 사라졌다가 1960년대 이후부터 활성화 된 현대예술장신구에서 다시 등장하였다. 초기 현대예술장신구 작가들은 장신구의 전통적 개념에 대한 도전, 사회적, 정치적 이슈에 대한 언급을 위한 장치로 사진을 활용하는 경우가 두드러졌으며, 2000년대 들어서면서 작가의 개인적 내러티브를 위해 사용하는 경우가 늘고 있는 추세이다. 예술장신구 분야에서는 작품의 주제나 조형적 요소 이외에도 소재를 다루는 기법적 능숙함이 작품의 깊이에 중요한 영향을 끼침으로, 작가들은 전통적 사진칠보나 데칼 기법 등 사진을 장신구에 응용하는 자신만의 방법을 연구하고 있으며, 앞으로도 이러한 흥미로운 시험들이 이어져 현대예술장신구의 독특한 표현매체로서의 가능성을 넓히는 역할로 작용할 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
Like in any other art media, the subject matter and the way of expression are the most important factors as well In contemporary art jewelry. For various artists’ intentions, numerous variety of forms, materials and techniques have been explored. Among those, the application of photography acts as a effective way of communication by being instantly recognizable and guaranteeing the objectivity and the narrative, which strengthen the artist‘s message. This study investigates jewelry as an artistic medium through the research of early history of the photographic images in jewelry and the observation of its reappearance in contemporary art jewelry differentiated from the meaning of the early years. The jewelry with photography in the mid-19th century withered because it lost its exclusivity due to the generalization of photography around the early 20th century and reappeared in contemporary art jewelry which have been proliferated after 1960. In many case, photographic images in early contemporary art jewelry were applied for effective expression to challenge the convention of jewelry, comment on social or political topics. Since 2000, more artists have applied photographic images to explore personal themes and narratives. In art jewelry field, besides of themes or formal elements, techniques and the way of handling materials impact significantly on the depth of work, artists continuously explore their own way of application using techniques like traditional photo enamel or ceramic decal. These continuing experiments are expected to broaden and enrich the possibility of contemporary art jewelry as an unique medium for artistic expression.
