Abstract
Mood boards are effective tools for stimulating designers' inspiration widely used in several design areas including product design. However, if designers do not understand processes of mood boards, it is likely to produce image collections not matched with design intent, or not organized properly. Therefore, it is necessary to understand image processing of mood boards that how to interpret a concept to relevant images and how to associate with images of the concept, particularly, errors when designers use it. To analyze the image processing of mood boards, the literature review was conducted on relevant theories of cognitive science. After that, a hypothetical model of image processing was produced to identify attributes of errors in mood board users. To compensate overarching issues, a principle of mapping was adapted to organize image data, and then it was applied to case analyses. 'Image Categorization-Association Mapping' was proposed to help designers to collect, organize and visualize image data, which adopts principles of similarity comparison and categorization. The proposed method could complement the constraints in concept recognition, categorization, and association aspects; it showed practicabilities that contribute designers to acquire information more effectively by organizing image data. The method seems to have significant advantages compared with conventional mood boards; It can help to identify important properties of target product based on typicality and category; provide clear and accessible logic when comparing and organizing images; improve image association capability of designers effectively as utilizing high fidelity images.
