Abstract
Our visual communication design activities are the interactions between sub-symbolic processing and symbolic processing. However, despite the fact that their interactions have greatly influenced our design activities, there is a lack of empirical research in the design sector. Therefore, this study seeks to promote visual understanding of designers perception of the image by looking at changes that lead to shifting from sub-symbolic phase to a symbolic phase. For this purpose, we studied the abstract images through the questionnaire to understand how design students perceive these images. We presented 92 industrial design students with 56 images transformed into seven levels for eight pairs of nouns in random order. Participants were asked to select the appropriate example from the eight examples of what they thought the presented image represented. As a result, images from the sub-symbolic phase to the symbolic phase were found in 14 pairs of 24 noun pairs used in the questionnaire. Through the questionnaire, first of all, we were able to see that we live in a symbolic and language-centered world. And we could experience the images of a single object changing step by step from the symbolic area to the sub-symbolic area. Besides, the images of the intermediate stage connecting the sub-symbolic area and the symbolic area are also very subtle, but it could be seen clearly. These intermediate images are expected to play a role in stimulating the free imagination as an image that enables the interaction between the microscopic semantics of the sub-symbolic processing and the macroscopic semantics of the symbolic processing.
