본 연구는 현대 패션에서 나타난 Burning 효과를 표현기법별로 유형 분석하여 Burning 효과의 특성 및 미적의미를 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구 방법은 Burning의 정의와 표현기법 및 현대미술에 서의 Burning 효과들을 살펴보고, 보그(www.vogue.com)와 퍼스트뷰(www.firstview.com)에서 제공하는 세계 4대 패션 컬렉션과 소셜네트위크 서비스인 핀터레스트(www.pinterest.co.kr) 및 해외 인터넷 쇼핑몰에서 Burning 효과가 응용된 패션자료를 수집하였다. 자료 수집 범위는 2000년부터 2017년으로 한정하여 Burning의 가시적 효과가 두드러지는 디자인 측면을 상위에 두고 최종적으로 188점의 사진을 선별하여 분석하였다. Burning 효과의 유형별 특성은 첫째, 직접 태우기를 통하여 형태와 색채의 무작위적인 조합에 의한 독특한 멋이 창출되며, 이는 기존의의상에 적용시 새로운 감각의 옷으로 재창조된다. 둘째, 프린팅(Printing)으로 Burning 효과를 실용적으로 표현 가능한 소재의 범위가 확대되며, 착시에 의한 착장 상태의 인체 형태 및 사이즈의 변화와 보완 효과가 있다. 셋째, 레이저 (Laser)와 에어 브러슁(Air-Brushing)은 Burning 효과를 극적으로 표현하고 특히, 레이저를 사용한 태우기 효과는 친환경 방법으로서 화학약품을 사용하는 워싱효과를 대체하고 한국의 전통미도 표현할 수있다. 넷째, 색조 스티칭(Tonal Stitiching)은 Burning 효과를 고급스러운 수공예 느낌으로, 비딩(Beading)은화려한 무늬로 창출한다. Burning 효과의 미적 의의는 추한 것으로 인식되었던 타서 손상된 옷을 새로운 미적관점에서 보고 그 조형적 특징을 다양한 기법을 통하여 새로운 감성으로 표현함으로써 패션의 예술성을 높이고그 미적 가치를 새롭게 창출한다는 데 있다. 또한, 현대 테크놀로지와의 결합을 통하여 그 감성적 표현을 확대하고 자원을 재활용하여 새로운 디자인으로 재탄생시킴으로써 현대 사회에서 요구되는 지속 가능한 패션디자인개발의 한 방법을 제시한다는 점에서 Burning 효과 활용의 의미를 찾을 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of techniques used in burning effect and itsaesthetic meanings in contemporary fashion. As a research method, the definition andexpressional techniques of burning were reviewed and the burning effects in contemporary artwere also studied. The photos of the world’s fourth fashion collections provided byVogue((www.vogue.com) and Firstview(www.firstview.com) were gathered and the images ofburning effects applied in fashion were also collected through the social network servie,Pinterest(www.pinterest.co.kr) and the foreign Internet shopping mall websites. The research waslimited to 2000 through 2017 and 188 photos were sorted as the ones with the most visibleburning effects. The characteristics of the types are first, direct burning creates unique beauty through therandom combination of forms and colors changing old clothes to new. Second, printing broadensthe range of materials on which burning is expressed and also visually changes the shape andsize of the human body in clothes through visual illusion. Third, laser and air-brushing bringdramatic effects to burning. In particular, laser burning can be used instead of the washingtechniques that use chemicals and also for expressing Korean traditional beauty. Fourth, tonalstitching shows luxurious sense of handicraft and beading creates splendid patterns. Theaesthetic meaning of burning effect is that it creates a new aesthetic value and enhances theartistic aspect of fashion by expressing the formal features of burnt clothes that were regardedas ugly and experimenting diverse techniques and also showing new sense of uniqueness. Additionally, the application of burning effect is meaningful in terms of expanding the territory ofsensible expression through incorporation with modern technologies and of suggesting one ofthe ways for sustainable fashion required in the current society by recycling used materials.
