Abstract
Contemporary painting is expanding in many ways through digital technology. In this background, this paper examines German painter Gerhard Richter’s ‘Strip’ painting. The aim is to explicate a specific example of the contemporary painting media expansion by considering the production background and formative features of Richter’s large digital printing series titled ‘Strip’, which began in 2011. For this goal, the approach is made on two levels: creation and appreciation. This study includes reviewing materials such as books, exhibition catalogs, relevant critiques and interviews that show the production process, and appreciation experience. ‘Strip’ starts with one abstract painting by Richter in 1990. The original work, painted in oil paint on canvas, was taken with digital photographs and then continuously decomposed to reach 4,096 sections. Through this process, painterly brushstrokes disappear and only fine straight lines remain. While images are disassembled and combined endlessly, the law of chance plays an important role, which can be seen in conjunction with Richter’s previous works. In ‘Strip’ series, Richter also shifts the artist’s role from ‘painter’ to ‘chooser’ by proceeding with countless ways of dividing and combining images of the work that already exists. This confirms that it is also in line with Duchamp’s ready-made strategy. Furthermore, pattern images, resulting from repeated color segmentation and combination, place the viewer between the possibilities and impossibility of looking at and away from traditional picture appreciation. As such, Richter’s ‘Strip’ presents a changing trend of painting in the digital media era, and can be considered in relation to the critical discussions of Isabelle Graw, who pointed out the link between contemporary painting and conceptual art, or David Joselit, who emphasized the redefinition of painting that deviates from the concept of material media.
