Abstract
Various Patination of Metals were developed to overcome the disadvantages of metals including limited colors and discoloration, enhancing the artistic values of metalwork. Of them, a traditional Japanese method called Niiro Patina has been an object of envy for many artists for its beautiful reddish brown on the surface of Copper. Realistic access to the method has not, however, been easy due to the obstacle derived from the restricted availability of its main material Rokusho only to Japan. There are pieces of literature derived from Japan about alternate Rokusho to replace Rokusho and satisfy desire for such effects, but they offer no reports on the outcomes of coloring by presenting merely the ingredients and conditions of chemicals. This study was started in order to understand the difference between the color and Niiro Patina of Copper and Brass when the conditions of alternative Rokusho were applied. The purpose of this is to realize the redish color without relying on Japanese Rokusho. The research results are as follows. 1) The historical background and coloring methods of Niiro Patina were investigated. 2) Alternate Rokusho is organized into 4 types including 3 types based on Copper Acetate and 3 types with Copper Carbonate based on Rokusho's ingredient list. 3) As a result of the process, an undesirable results on Brass, but a stable and redish color appeared on the copper surface in alternate Rokusho with Copper Carbonate and NaCl. 4) The positive result is that it is possible to realize the red color of the copper surface without relying on Japanese Rokusho, so it is expected that it will be established as a quantitative coloring technique, so that anyone can easily access it and obtain the effect efficiently.
