Abstract
The study discusses the possibility of form-giving activities of artificial intelligence (AI) through the sketching experiment substituted into the schematic model in which the form-giving that have been regarded as unique human abilities. In the area of design and art, form-giving activities are human-specific activities that give form and construct symbolic and material substance to human thoughts. Recently, AI technology has opened the possibility of mimetic activities as human form-giving activities, such as creating forms of objects or creating new images. In order to analyze the similarity and differences in the process of generating concepts between humans and AI, this study analyzed the schema model as a principle for generating new concepts by humans. The schema model assumes the process of generating a concept as a corresponding relationship between the component (slot) of the concept and the content (filler) to fill the components, and provides a framework to analyze the interaction between the component of the goal concept and its semantics. To study, 20 students were asked an idea sketch task aimed at the concept of a 'new chair' and the researcher observed the process. As a result of the experiment, eight meaningful correspondences were derived, and the meaning and generation process was analyzed through two paths: the thinking process starting from the slot and the thinking process starting from the filler. Based on this sketch experiment, the similarities and differences of the process between humans and AI were discussed by substituting the form-giving activities into the mechanism of GTP-3 and DALL·E, which have recently emerged issues. In conclusion, the form-giving activities of humans and AI is possible by the relational correspondences that connect existing concepts. There are differences in the way of constructing relational correspondences, which results suggest fundamental differences in the form-giving activities of humans and AI.
