Abstract

This study aims to empirically examine the impact of AI-driven generative 3D modeling on the design thinking process in industrial design education, with a particular focus on the ideation stage. Although the use of generative AI tools has rapidly expanded in design pedagogy, their influence on students’ creative problem-solving processes and sketch-based ideation abilities has not been sufficiently validated. To address this gap, a pilot study was conducted with fifteen second-year industrial design students at Arizona State University in the United States, comparing traditional sketching and AI-based hybrid sketching. A post-experiment survey measured cognitive load, design experience, and learning and creativity outcomes, while expert evaluators assessed the sketch results based on idea fluency, visual refinement, creativity, development quality, and layout composition. The results indicate that although hybrid sketching did not significantly reduce cognitive load (p = .184), it produced significantly higher satisfaction in design experience (p = .016) and enhanced learners’ engagement and self-efficacy. Creativity showed no significant differences (p = .204), but open-ended responses revealed positive perceptions of hybrid sketching in supporting idea expansion and iterative exploration. Expert evaluations further showed that traditional sketching excelled in early idea generation and creativity, whereas hybrid sketching demonstrated superiority in form accuracy, visual completeness, and layout organization. These findings suggest that traditional sketching is more effective during early divergent ideation, while AI-based hybrid sketching supports refinement and visual development. Accordingly, this study proposes a hybrid ideation pedagogy that integrates both approaches to enhance efficiency and creativity in industrial design education.
