Abstract
With various expressions enabled by the technological development during the post-modern era, today’s typography has begun to seek the artistic aesthetics of shapes, in addition to pursuing the functional aesthetics of conveying information. Thus, numerous experimental typographies have appeared, especially in Futurism, Dadaism, Expressionism, and Deconstructionism, accentuating the artistic beauty in shapes. The carefree and characterful expressions of these experimental typographies did little to cater to readability, practicality, and functionality. For this reason, compared to grid-structured typographies of the modern era, the experimental ones do not show a clear formality and are free from rules; hence, it is difficult to recognize its message instantly. Such experimental typographies emphasize a new, interesting beauty in shapes, but if the focus is solely on aesthetics and disregards the message, it is against the goal of communication, the original purpose of typography. Even in pursuing interest-provoking aesthetics of shapes, what needs to be considered is the expression of the message that must be conveyed. A convincing visual communication design can only be achieved through typography that considers both technical and aesthetical aspects. Experimental typography has become more diverse due to the development of technology in the digital era, and has attracted attention in the field of graphic design to date. For this reason, I felt the need for semantic interpretation for the design of experimental typography. The purpose of this study is to interpret the meaning of the message by analyzing the visual symbols of concrete poetry from Roland Barthes’ semiotic perspective. The research method is to understand the message of the work by analyzing the meaning of each component of the concrete poetry and grasping the background of the artist. As a result of the study, it was possible to find out the ease of interpretation of the characters constituting the concrete poetry by Roland Barthes’ semantic analysis.
