Abstract

This study was started to confirm that modernist art such as Cubism and Surrealism were influenced by mathematics. Among modernist art, the fact that artists and works of Cubism or Surrealism were influenced by mathematics is recorded in various studies, but its contents are scattered, and it is difficult to find studies that present them clearly and in detail. In this study, which began in this situation, this paper observes the menifesto of Cubism, Dimensionism, and Surrealism among modernist art to confirm the mathematical interests of the artists who participated in them, and then clearly understand the mathematical approach revealed in the works. Einstein’s theory of relativity, which emerged in the early 20th century, was a groundbreaking event that changed the paradigm of science and was based on non-Euclidean geometry. Non-Euclidean geometry played a major role in breaking the absolute axioms presupposed by Euclidean geometry, which also had a great influence on artists at the time. The non-Euclidean geometry has been attractive to modernist who have always pursued a craving for new things. The mathematical(scientific) concepts observed in this study are theory of relativity, non-Euclidean geometry, simultaneity, four-dimensional space-time, and four-dimensional space. The understanding of this allows for mathematical interpretation of various works, and this study examines the works of Max Bill and Johann Otto von Spreckelsen, who continued the modernist art with Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, and Salvador Dali, who led modernist art at the time. The non-Euclidean geometry and theory of relativity causes modernist to abandon traditional forms in their expressions of objects. They encountered new concepts in mathematics with their own level and perception and expressed them in their own style. Therefore, it is meaningless to approach the mathematical concept itself in their works. This is because their understanding is quite instinctive and artistic.
