Abstract
Georges Bataille emphasizes mankind to transfer from production-oriented to consumption-oriented, and presents the notion of ‘expenditure’. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the works of two artists Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Rirkrit Tiravanija, who have been working to communicate human relationships since the 1990s, as the concept of ‘expenditure’ and find its significance. ‘Expenditure’ awakens human relationships or values lost in a accumulation-oriented society because it includes ‘gift giving’, ‘to circulate the overflowing surplus to the deficient place’, and ‘to communicate beyond human individuals’. Thus, examining contemporary art that reveals and implements the concept of expenditure makes us reflect on the lack of human relations in a capital-centered society and conveys the need to positively consume surplus capital. In addition, it is possible to discuss the practical value of contemporary art that suggests alternatives to human relations. Torres’ organic and fluid installation arts reveal the taboo of continuity through the expenditure called ‘death’ and ‘erotism’. This refers to the dimension of communication that wants to go beyond human individuals. Tiravaniza’s nomadic restaurant works provide ‘art as a gift’, and through his community projects we can find the significance of expenditure, an unproductive consumption that seeks to circulate biased capital for the underprivileged. Focusing on the works of these two artists, it can be confirmed that contemporary art is actively reflecting Bataille’s “expenditure’s meaning”, and its value can work positively in the lacking relationship between humans in this era. Discussions on expenditure place individuals in social networks and make them aware of the ethics of the community. In addition, contemporary art through expenditure can take the lack of human relations to the level of communication and practically convey the significance of expenditure seeking happiness in a capitalist society.
