후미히코 마키의 건축에서 나타난 다원적, 절충적 방식에 관한 연구

후미히코 마키는 세계적인 일본의 건축가이다. 본 연구는 확고한 모더니스트로 알려진 그의 건축적 특성을 객관적이고 종합적으로 밝히고자 한다. 그의 주요한 건축 작품과 다수의 선행논문 및 국내외의연구를 고찰해본 결과, 그는 많은 일본 현대 건축가들에서 나타나는 다원적이고 절충적인 방식의 건축을 하고 있는 건축가이다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 기존의 선행연구와는 달리 객관적이고 종합적인관점에서 마키의 건축세계 전체를 이해할 수 있도록 그의 건축적 특성을 밝히는 데 있다. 본 연구의방법은 우선 일본 현대건축의 시대별 상황과 특성에 대한 고찰을 통해 다수의 일본 현대 건축가들에서 나타난 다양하고도 절충적인 건축개념과 방식들을 살펴보는 것이다. 그리고 마키가 제안한 그의 건축개념과 방식을 살펴보고, 그의 주요한 건축 작품에서 나타나는 건축적 특성을 키워드로 정리한다. 또한 좀 더 객관성을 확보하기 위해 국내외의 다양한 평가에서 나타난 그의 건축적 특성을 정리하여비교한다. 본 연구의 결과 다양한 건축적 특성들이 나타났는데, ‘모더니즘의 적용과 확장’ ‘새로운 기술과 재료에 대한 탐색’ ‘일본전통의 표현’ ‘지역주의’ 등 4가지로 그 특성을 종합하여 분류할 수 있다. 그리고 마키의 건축적 특성에 대한 키워드의 빈도수를 비교해보면 ‘새로운 기술과 재료에 대한 탐색’ 과 ‘지역주의’가 우세한 편이고, ‘일본전통의 표현’도 적지 않게 나타났는데, 다수의 일본 현대 건축가들과 같이 ‘다원적이고’ ‘절충적인’ 설계 방식을 통해 상기의 특성이 개별적으로 보다는 복합적으로 대부분의 마키 건축에서 보여진다.
Abstract
Fumihiko Maki is a world-famous Japanese architect. This study aims to objectively and comprehensively reveal the architectural characteristics of an architect known as a staunch modernist. Based on reviews of his major architectural works, numerous previous articles, and domestic and international researches, he is an architect who practices a pluralistic and eclectic mode of architecture that is characteristic of numerous contemporary Japanese architects. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to reveal his architectural characteristic so that we can understand the entire architectural world of Maki from an objective and comprehensive perspective, unlike previous studies. The method of this study is to examine pluralistic and eclectic concepts and modes of Japanese contemporary architects through an examination of the situation and characteristic of Japanese contemporary architecture by period. And this study examines the Maki’s architectural concepts and modes which are mentioned by himself and arranges the architectural characteristics in his major works by key words. Also this study arranges and compares Maki’s architectural concepts and modes to various domestic and international evaluations that have a little more objectivity. As a result of this study, there are various architectural characteristics in Maki’s architecture. And his concepts and modes can be synthetically classified by ①application and expansion of modernism, ②exploration of new technologies and materials, ③expression of Japanese tradition, ④regionalism. When comparing the frequency of key words for Maki’s architectural characteristics, ‘regionalism’ and ‘exploration of new technologies and materials’ are dominant, and ‘expression of Japanese tradition’ is revealed in a middle number of cases. And the above characteristics are seen mostly in his architecture in combination rather than individually, through ‘pluralistic’ and ‘eclectic’ design approach, similar to that of many contemporary Japanese architects.
