Abstract

This research aims to propose a new nonverbal communication method for social robots based on unconscious and instinctive physical changes in humans. As a research method, the definition of social robots was examined and the interaction characteristics of each type were summarized to identify the environment in which nonverbal communication of social robots takes place. Furthermore, a preference survey on social robot interaction was conducted to derive insights for setting a new direction for nonverbal communication research in social robots. As a result, the goal of active emotion expression through abstracted movements of social robots was established. Next, Ekman's six basic emotions were selected as the emotions to be expressed by the social robot, based on research results on emotional expression from various academic perspectives. To convey rich emotions through exaggerated movements, similar contraction and expansion movements were attempted by referring to the Squash and Stretch technique, which is one of the 12 basic principles of animation. Then, a working prototype of the social robot was created using 3D printing and actuators. Initial emotional movements were designed by adjusting the reciprocating speed of the actuators. Finally, the prototype was modified by applying an agile methodology to the design process to quickly reflect the user’s requirements in order to develop the social robot’s emotional movements. To date, nonverbal communication in social robots for lively interaction has been studied, but the scope is still limited to the robot’s facial expressions and the rotation of body parts such as the head and arms. This study is significant in that it shows the potential for broader communication research in future social robots, moving away from the communication methods that developers have been relying on. In future research, the effectiveness of the social robot’s emotion expression through movement proposed in this study will be verified by comparing it with other emotion expression methods.
