Abstract
This research analyzes the works of contemporary Kenyan artist Wangechi Mutu from the mid -2000s through the lens of Deleuze and Guattari’s rhizome theory. It explores multiplicity, hybridity, deterritorialization, and reterritorialization, identities, and non-hierarchical connections in her art. Mutu works between New York and Nairobi, employing her collage technique to create unique and surreal forms on canvas that merge many elements, including humans, animals, machines, nature, and supernatural beings. In her artistic process, she utilizes a diverse range of materials, such as glitter, acrylic paint, pearls, fabrics, and feathers, along with images incorporated from National Geographic, medical journals, Vogue, science fiction, and pornography magazines. By expressing diverse identities on canvas, she visually deconstructs stereotypes and presents new meanings, narratives, and aesthetic possibilities. Mutu’s iconic works critique racial and gender stereotypes surrounding Black women, using surreal and symbolic narratives to transcend fixed identity. Her art visually embodies the multiplicity and non-hierarchical structures, breaking down boundaries and emphasizing new processes of becoming through deterritorialization and reterritorialization. Through her hybrid and fluid identities, Mutu challenges contemporary society’s persistent discriminatory issues by dismantling Western-centric and patriarchal perspectives. This research demonstrates how Mutu’s works, informed by rhizomatic aesthetics, contribute to expanding boundaries in contemporary art and creating worlds. Additionally, her art provides critical insights into understanding multiplicity and hybridity in contemporary art, illustrating how rhizome theory can support artistic innovation as a philosophical foundation. By blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction, Mutu’s work redefines identities as fluid and ever-evolving, offering a visual discourse that resists categorization and embraces transformation.
