Abstract

The medium is the foundation of all painting works, and thus, the medium of watercolor determines the characteristics of watercolor painting. In watercolor art, the unique material requirements make this type of art more flexible and free, while also creating its distinctive creative organizational structure. With the passage of time, the tools, techniques, and aesthetic culture of any painting form undergo changes. As an independent painting form, watercolor painting evolves and updates continuously with the times, and its medium materials also change accordingly. Against this research background, the main objective of this study is to reveal the value and significance of the medium in modern art watercolor painting through a comparative analysis of traditional and modern watercolor techniques. To achieve this objective, the study employs a case study approach. Firstly, by detailing the materials and expression forms of traditional and modern watercolors, the study clarifies their changes and differences. Then, it compares and analyzes the application of mediums in traditional versus modern watercolor painting. Finally, through case studies, it further illustrates the diversity of watercolor and medium in modern art. The study concludes that in watercolor painting techniques, a thorough understanding and effective use of various materials and tools have overcome the transparency and fluidity characteristics of traditional watercolors. Modern watercolor painting, by employing contemporary materials such as watercolor glazing mediums, ox gall, and watercolor enhancers, as well as integrating digital media and etching, demonstrates layered and multiple effects. Consequently, modern watercolor painting not only freely exhibits expressive qualities similar to other painting forms but also retains the unique characteristics of watercolor art.
