Abstract

This paper aims to go beyond a general consideration of the healing function of art andemphasizes the need for specialized art therapy programs. It analyzes specific case studies toassess their effectiveness and suggests the potential introduction of differentiated healingprograms for youth. The motivation for this study stems from the need for alternatives to risingjuvenile delinquency and recidivism. Beyond legal and punitive measures, a fundamental healingprocess is required to restore self-esteem and foster positive thinking and worldview amongat-risk youth. To this end, the study examines the structure and progress of the ‘J.A.T. ArtHealing Program for Youth with Conditional Non-Prosecution,’ conducted in collaborationbetween Chonbuk National University, Jeonju District Prosecutors’ Office, and the Jeonju CrimePrevention Committee, which has been held four times since 2022. The study draws severalconclusions. First, despite variations in subjects, themes, materials, and methods, the programconsistently followed five phases: self-awareness and expression (weeks 1-2), shaping andhealing (weeks 3-7), inner healing (weeks 8-10), and socialized healing (weeks 11-12). Second, the hands-on nature of sculpture, involving active physical expression, helped establisha strong rapport with participants. Third, the final exhibition process led to genuine self-esteemrecovery and reduced recidivism by fostering personal and social emotional purification. Finally, the study suggests that sculpture-based art therapy should be expanded to not only conditionallynon-prosecuted youth but also to adolescents going through turbulent times.
