Abstract

This study is a project-based case study conducted through industry-academic cooperation, aimed at improving signboard design based on the regional characteristics of Cheonbu Village inUlleung County. The village, which faces challenges in attracting tourists due to itsunderdeveloped status as a tourist destination and lack of distinctive image, was chosen as thetarget of this research. The study highlights the need for a different approach from previousresearch focused on large urban and tourist destinations. Instead, it seeks to find a designdirection that enhances the image of an underrepresented region. The research method involvedvideo analysis and interviews with representatives of local residents. The study identified thefollowing design directions: 1) Incorporating the village's natural landscape, 2) Using safe andsimple forms, 3) Ensuring high visibility with clear fonts and symbols, 4) Adopting a bright andtrendy style, and 5) Designing signboards that blend with individual buildings. To materializethese directions, visual elements with a bright and trendy emotional appeal were derived usingimages of the village’s natural scenery. Keywords such as 'cute,''vibrant,''romantic,''tranquil,' and'refreshing' were drawn from the imagery of the surrounding sea, the sunset at a renowned spotthat villagers take pride in, and the Elephant Rock formation. The overarching style keywordselected to encompass these elements was ‘retro vintage.’ A mood board was created, andprimary colors and typography were selected. Based on this, signboards for individual shops weredesigned, with variations in layout, illustrations highlighting the uniqueness of each shop’sinformation, and the application of layout designs to the physical shapes of the signboards asdesign outcomes. The study aimed to create unique signboards that highlight the village’scharacter while showcasing each business's individuality. It seeks to contribute to signboarddesign by offering a case that reflects regional features and improves the village landscape.
