Abstract
This study explores the structural and symbolic characteristics of butterflies and the symbolicmeanings of the surrealist decalcomania technique. By analyzing butterfly motif garments incontemporary fashion design, we aim to produce works based on these findings. The structuralfeatures of butterflies and the symbolism of surrealism have conveyed philosophical messagesand inspired art. They have been utilized to create visually captivating and symbolic garments infashion design. This study seeks to create works by combining these elements of butterflies andsurrealism. We examined the biological traits of butterflies and the symbolic meanings ofdecalcomania using prior studies and specialized literature. Additionally, we analyzed butterflymotif garments featured in Vogue Runway collections over the past five years. The results ofthe study are as follows: 1)examined the structural and symbolic characteristics of butterflies, particularly focusing on the adult stage during metamorphosis. This helped in selecting designconcepts and colors for the garments. 2)an exploration of the characteristics of the decalcomaniatechniques and surrealist symbolism, we created butterfly images using decalcomania andexpressed them through digital printing. 3)Examining butterfly motifs in contemporary fashioncollections revealed how designers structurally and symbolically express them, which we appliedto our garment silhouettes. 4)based on theoretical research and case analysis, a work processwas structured, and eight types of butterflies were selected, each used to create butterfly motifgarments utilizing decalcomania images. This study developed new visual expressions of butterflymotifs by fusing traditional decalcomania art techniques with modern digital printing technology. It is expected to contribute to exploring new possibilities in the field of fashion design bymodernizing the aesthetic characteristics of butterflies and blending technological innovation withartistic expression.
