Abstract

The researcher depicts in paintings the elements observed in everyday landscapes, along withthe subtle changes that occur according to light and darkness. The process involves exploringhow to visualize both the internal state felt and the actual state of the object when perceiving asubject. Driven by curiosity about perceiving and remembering everyday landscapes, this studyexamines the concepts of perception and memory in Henri Bergson’s “Matter and Memory”. Italso seeks to understand the flow of landscapes present in photographic images, pursuing theintrinsic meaning of images and the inherent world of the self. By doing so, the researcherdocuments and analyzes the process of representing real landscapes and internal emotions intwo-dimensional paintings. Through this work, the concepts of “duration” and “intuition” expandour perception, allowing objects to be seen from fresh perspectives rather than throughconventional views, thereby broadening the understanding and experiences of the world. Bergsonsuggested that when perceiving an object, it should be grasped in its pure state, directly withoutvision or thought interfering. However, since pure perception exists only ideationally, it cannotbe implemented through actual behavior. Bergson recognized the potential in camera-basedperception as a means to overcome this limitation. The camera’s mode of perception, based onautomatism, excludes subjectivity and departs from representation and convention, revealing theworld of moving images that cannot be physically perceived. The researcher outlines the processof how photographic images (pure perception) captured in real landscapes overlap with theunconscious mind (pure memory) in the expression through painting. This study reevaluates thepersonal conceptions held by individuals through the concepts of perception and memory, therebyconcretizing the expression of the work and establishing the inherent meaning of the paintingactivities.
