Abstract

The impact of 'COVID-19' has led to a desire for humanity to escape from suppression. This suppression is also a reminiscent of the Surrealist movement in the 1930s, which reflected a world of dreams and the unconsciousness in art during the time of social turmoil cause by World War I. Thus, the subject of this study was chosen as the prominent designer ‘Elsa Schiaparelli’, who integrated surrealism into fashion design, with a specific focus on one of the design characteristics, known as 'Objects'. Based on an analysis of the types of objects used by past surrealistic artists, the researcher has “reconfigured“ the types of objects. with this as a focal point, the researcher aims to analyze Schiaparelli's designs. Which has led to missing pages in research analyzing different designers through the eye of reconfigured objects. For that reason, based on the analysis of the Objects types set by the past Surrealist artists, we aim to redefine the different types of Objects and analyze Schiaparelli's designs by focusing on these 'Objects'. To add on, in the eye of Objects, we also aim to analyze how past designs have been reinterpreted, particularly noting the modern reinterpretation of the Schiaparelli house during its relaunch in 2012. In this study, we have redefined the types of Objects as 'Synthetic Objects', 'Transposed Objects', 'Exaggerated Objects', and 'Illusion Objects', and analyzed Schiaparelli's Surrealist fashion design with a focus on Objects. As a result, it has become evident that the portrayal of sensuality through exaggeration or displacement of certain body parts, the emergence of avant-garde silhouettes and various Objects, the use of contrasting colors, and especially the proactive use of gold color contribute to the portrayal of a glamorous and elegant image of the house. The goal of this research is to contribute to the development of the Surrealist fashion design centered around Objects, and explore new fashion designing methods by reinterpreting past designs in a contemporary manner to uphold the image of the current, new house.
