Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find the possibility of creative and formative expression in the field of contemporary jewelry through the discovery and utilization of new materials. Accordingly, basalt fiber, a polymer composite material, is selected as the focus of this research. The study examines the characteristics and applications of basalt fiber and confirms its potential for integration into jewelry through design-oriented sample work. To achieve this, basalt fiber was manually disassembled and reconstructed, with design intentions expressed through hand lay-up molding. Actual jewelry pieces were created by fusing basalt fiber with traditional materials. The experimental method involved dividing basalt fibers into long and short strands, exploring both unintended natural overlapping effects and deliberate expressions achieved through hand lay-up molding. Various visual effects were produced, including accidental images, overlapping patterns, and intentional designs. Ultimately, jewelry incorporating these elements was produced to visually represent the research findings. The research results are summarized as follows. First, the unique texture and characteristics of basalt fiber were effectively show cased with fewer than three layers of overlap during reconstruction. Second, hand lay-up molding proved to be the most suitable method for fiber reconstruction. Third, overlapping expressions that utilized the permeability and elasticity of basalt fibers successfully conveyed contrast and depth, resembling a drawing, and facilitated the creation of natural curves. Fourth, the fusion of fibers and resins allowed for the application of metal processing techniques and integration with traditional jewelry materials. As a result, the dismantling and reconstruction of basalt fibers demonstrate a high potential for use in contemporary jewelry, offering new material applications and fusion expressions. Given that hand lay-up molding can yield various forms depending on the maker’s skill and intent, basalt fibers are expected to be utilized in diverse and creative ways as a novel expressive material in jewelry design.
