Abstract

The diversity of game content provides players with a rich gaming experience but also increases cognitive load. Therefore, designers need to focus on reducing cognitive load when designing game interfaces. According to short-term memory theory, providing information that aligns with players' attention preferences aids in their understanding and retention. The purpose of this study is to explore the order in which players with different cognitive abilities and preferences pay attention to game information. It is necessary to by doing so, to seek to better understand the preference characteristics of different types of players and provide reference material for game design and optimization. The research methods and contents was conducted in two parts. First, a literature review determined that game information players need to process includes game operation and control, understanding rules and objectives, strategy and decision-making, story and characters, social interaction, and environmental adaptation. These elements were included in the survey composition. Second, using descriptive statistical analysis, the average evaluations of players were compared, and their attention order to game information was investigated. Additionally, the study analyzed players’ attention from three perspectives: play motivation, immersive, and game complexity. The results showed significant differences in the order of players' attention depending on game complexity and player type. Therefore, game development and design should focus on effectively presenting and simplifying basic game controls and rules, ensuring a reasonable information layout and optimized presentation. Based on this, win conditions that offer fun and attraction should be developed. For complex information and details, it is essential to present them more effectively in temporal and spatial dimensions, aligning with human cognitive characteristics. This approach will enhance the gaming experience for various player types.
