(My Room is Another Fish Bowl)>과 같은 전시의 주요 작품을 예시로 관계미학이 어떻게 드러나는지 살펴본다.
Abstract
This study explores relational aesthetics as it is materialized through alterity and interactive experiences in contemporary media art, with a particular focus on Philippe Parreno’s exhibition ⟪Voice⟫. Media art fundamentally reshapes the relationship between the artwork and the audience, transitioning from a passive model of spectatorship to one of active participation. Unlike traditional static artworks, media art creates dynamic environments in which audience interaction becomes an essential component of understanding. Drawing upon Nicolas Bourriaud’s theory of Relational Aesthetics, this study investigates how Parreno’s works exemplify and extend this theoretical framework. The exhibition ⟪Voice⟫ demonstrates the fluid nature of interactive media art, where meaning is continuously generated through engagement with audiences and external factors. Parreno constructs a multilayered interaction between artworks, viewers, and their environment, challenging traditional notions of authorship and reception. This study examines key works—<Membrain>, <∂A>, and <My Room is Another Fish Bowl>—to explore how they use sound and movement to create interactive experiences for viewers. By positioning the audience as co-creators, Parreno underscores the essential role of interaction in contemporary artistic relationships. His works embody relational aesthetics by fostering fluid and unpredictable encounters. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of relational aesthetics in media art and offers insights for future research in interactive and participatory artistic practices.
