The Prospect of Microbial Chitinase as a Bio-Shield for the Biocontrol of Plant Pathogens: A Step towards Eco-Friendly Farming

Inconsistency of plant yield due to its susceptibility to pests and diseases have strongly affected plant production. Fungal plant disease and insect pest damages have caused tremendous losses in agriculture. Nowadays, the most widely used approaches in plant disease management are application of synthetic chemical pesticides. However, these chemical pesticides are harmful to environment and human health which demands a solution. An alternative approach to avoid undesired effects of chemical control could be biological control that exhibit direct action against plant pathogens. Chitin degrading enzymes, such as chitinases, are important biocatalysts which have potential to dissolve chitin layer present in cell wall of several phytopathogenic fungi and integument of insects. This review mainly highlights the recent advances in using chitinase as a biocontrol agent for the control of plant pathogens. In this review, we intent to broaden the understanding regarding future of microbial chitinase and its potential application in agriculture.
