현대 사회는 급격한 변화와 기술 발전 속에서 물질적 풍요를 누리고 있지만, 동시에 기술 혁신은 다양한 사회적 문제를 야기하고 있다. 특히 대중매체는 사회적 양극화를 심화시키며, 사회적 문제에 대한 공론화를 촉진하고 있다. 또한, 정보의 빠른 확산과 그로 인한 여론 형성은 사회적 갈등을 더욱 부각시키는 결과를 초래하고 있다. 이러한 사회적 모순은 패션 분야에도 영향을 미쳐, 정상과 비정상의 경계가 모호해지는 무한한 표현 방식으로 확산되었다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 사회적 모순을 그로테스크적 성격으로 규명하고, 이를 패션 디자인의 중요한 특징으로 분석하였다. 특히, 알렉산더 맥퀸의 컬렉션에 나타난 그로테스크적 특성은 기괴한 공포, 비정상적 유희, 신체 훼손과 왜곡, 극단적 혐오의 네 가지로 구분된다. 이 연구는 각 특성을 기반으로 독창적인 패션 디자인을 개발하고, 이를 통해 그로테스크적 특성이 패션 디자인 연구에 기여할 수 있는 기초 자료를 제공하고자 했다. 기괴한 공포는 죽음을 암시하는 이미지와 악마적 표현을 통해 인간 내면의 공포와 파괴적 본능을 드러내며, 비정상적 유희는 현실에서 벗어난 유희적인 분위기와 과장된 실루엣을 통해 현대 사회에 대한 비판을 담고 있다. 신체 훼손과 왜곡은 인간 존재와 정체성의 위기를 상징하며, 극단적 혐오는 사회적 불만과 고통을 투사하는 방식으로 해방감을 표현한다. 이 네 가지 특성에 기반한 4벌의 디자인과 10개의 아이템은 3D 가상 의상으로 구현되었으며, 알렉산더 맥퀸의 그로테스크적 특성을 패션 언어로 재해석하였다. 본 연구는 현대 사회의 불안과 혼란을 비판하고 인간 존재의 본질을 탐구하는 중요한 시각을 제시하며, 패션 디자인 연구에 중요한 기초 자료가 될 것으로 기대된다. 또한, 이 연구를 통해 사회적 모순을 반영한 창의적 패션 디자인의 중요성이 재조명되기를 바란다.
Abstract
Modern society enjoys material abundance amid rapid changes and technological advancements, but at the same time, technological innovations have led to various social problems. In particular, mass media has deepened social polarization and played a role in promoting public discussions about various social issues. Additionally, the rapid spread of information and the resulting formation of public opinion have intensified social conflicts. These social contradictions have also influenced the fashion field, leading to an expansion of infinite expressive forms where the boundaries between normal and abnormal become blurred. This study identifies these social contradictions as grotesque characteristics and analyzes them as an important feature of fashion design. Specifically, the grotesque characteristics seen in Alexander McQueen's collections can be categorized into four types: bizarre horror, abnormal play, bodily mutilation and distortion, and extreme disgust. The study aimed to develop original fashion designs based on these characteristics and provide foundational material that contributes to the study of grotesque traits in fashion design. Bizarre horror reveals the inner fears and destructive instincts of humans through death-evoking images and demonic expressions, while abnormal play captures a critical view of modern society through unrealistic, playful atmospheres and exaggerated silhouettes. Bodily mutilation and distortion symbolize the crisis of human existence and identity, while extreme disgust expresses liberation by projecting social discontent and pain. The four designs and ten items based on these characteristics were realized as 3D virtual garments, reinterpreting McQueen’s grotesque traits through the language of fashion. This study offers an important perspective on criticizing the anxiety and chaos of modern society and exploring the essence of human existence, with the expectation that it will serve as a crucial foundation for fashion design research. Furthermore, it is hoped that this study will highlight the importance of creative fashion design that reflects social contradictions.
