Abstract
Color interacts with surrounding colors, causing differences between its actual and perceived appearance. In particular, the attributes of hue, lightness, and chroma can be altered by adjacent colors, leading to variations in perceptual characteristics and emotional responses. This study focuses on the color heat among various emotional responses and aims to investigate the effect of background color on the warm-cool evaluation of color. The primary objective is to identify the perceptual interactions between color and background color and to verify the resulting variations in warm-cool evaluations. For this purpose, stimuli were created by combining four background colors(warm, cool, non-biased, gray), six central colors(Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple), and two central color sizes(large, small). Participants evaluated the warm-cool of the stimuli through an experimental procedure using a 7-point Likert scale. Each stimulus was presented randomly on a display screen, and the evaluation included both the whole stimulus and the central color. The key findings of the study are as follows. First, statistical analysis confirmed that both background colors and central colors, as well as their interaction, significantly influenced warm-cool evaluations. Second, assimilation effect between the central color and the background color led to variations in the warm-cool evaluation of the central color. Third, the warm-cool evaluation of the whole stimulus was more strongly affected by the background color than the central color; however, in ambiguous background conditions, the warm-cool perception of the central color played a more significant role. Fourth, the warm-cool evaluation of the whole stimulus was also related to the size of the central color, with smaller central areas having a reduced impact on whole warm-cool perception. This study empirically confirms that the warm-cool evaluation of color can vary depending on background color and emphasizes the contextual significance of background color in color perception. These findings are expected to serve as valuable foundational data for color planning aimed at controlling warm-cool imagery.
