Abstract
Digital fonts are being used in various fields in accordance with the changes of the times and the advancement of production technology, and play a major role in communication, recording, and information transmission. Looking at recent development trends in fonts for body text, which play a key role in conveying such information, there is a growing trend toward the development of variable fonts with high expandability for web-based environments and digital device use. In particular, it can be confirmed that the development of Dotum font is more prominent than that of Batang font, which has been mainly used on traditional media such as paper. This study was conducted based on a literature review and case studies of six representative Hangeul Dotum series variable fonts for text developed within the past decade. Variable fonts can utilize three axes: width, weight, and slant. Most of them follow the existing dotum font form and have no design differentiation, and utilize less than two axes or are developed only with the weight function. It can be seen that the variable font function is not being actively utilized. In addition, we analyzed the development status to find and utilize cases suitable for the proliferation of digital media and various screen environments. As a result of the analysis, most of the variable fonts for the main text of the Hangeul Dotum series developed are paid fonts that use less than two axes with the development specifications of 11,173 Unicode Hangeul characters. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a new type of text dotum variable font that actively utilizes the three axes of variable fonts. Currently, researchers are developing a practical, usable Hangeul variable font for text that utilizes all three axes. After completion, we plan to share it so that it can be used as basic data for developing variable fonts. It is hoped that this study will serve as a stepping stone for academic research on variable fonts for text in the Hangeul Dotum series to be developed in the future, and that various studies will be conducted.
