Abstract
A Study on Korean body text type Font Design for Publishing Lee, Ki-Sung Professor of Dept. Kaywon School of Art and Design Font is classified into block types, photographic types and digital font by material. These days typesetting analogue font, no matter if it is metal font or ceramic type, is rarely used. After the emergence of computerized typesetting machine, computer fonts for monitor, screen, printer are called digital fonts. Korean character(Hangeul) has 24 consonants and vowels. The number of correct modern Hangeul syllables is 11,172 and, among them, 399 syllables are without coda. But the number of English syllables are incalculable because the syllables are instantly built by the combination of consonants and vowels. There are two kinds of Hangeul font types. One type fits inside rectangular outline, like Bonmunche(Body text type, Batangche, Butche, Myeongjo), Nemoche(Dodumche, Gothic), Jemokche(Headline), Designche (Graphic), Seoyeche (Calligraphic), Foreign(imported) word pyogiche, Sseugiche (Script), Puleosseugiche. The other type font is not fit inside rectangular outline, such as Talnemoteulche(Ppallaejulche). Hangeul Bonmunche is a typeface of Korean body text type font for publishing and it is best for reading. The English font and the Hangeul font for publishing consist of 0 and 1 in digital font. The differences of the Hangeul digital font from the English font is when designing, the proportion among the parts of each letter should be much more carefully met. To sum up, the Hangeul digital font especially the typeface of Korean body text type font for publishing should fit the characteristics of Hangeul, represent 11,172 all modern Hangeul syllables, and be prepared for the unification of the nation.
