Abstract
Character industry, which typically fits into the concept of One Source Multi Use, can be easily linked with other industries. Once fictional characters become globally popular, they generate steady revenue like Mickey Mouse and Hello Kitty. Thus, many countries in the world foster character business and support character industry as one of the strategic industries for the future. Recently, a number of Korean made characters earn revenues from foreign licensing while gaining their fame and popularity in the world market. However, Korean characters fall short of their potential in comparison with global top characters in terms of revenues or global awareness. As Korea, heavily export-oriented nation, is currently facing a phenomenon that the share of SMEs in export activities has recently been decreasing, there is an urgent need to nurture new SMEs in the field of strategic industries. There has been no Korean attempt to profoundly study over character industry or business, especially in globalizing issues. Therefore, we will focus on understanding current issues and characteristics of character business/industry. And also we will provide effective strategies and implications for overseas expansion to Korean SMEs through .case studies on successful local and global characters. The result of this study indicates that CEO or top management, who has globally successful characters, has prior operating expertise, international experience and strong will to be globalized. Their common key success factors are 1) developing design and concept of character which is well fitted into the world market from the beginning, 2) planting global cultural code into the story to overcome cultural discount and barriers, 3) adopting born-global strategy.
