Abstract
Purpose: This paper analyzes the effects of multi-spot advertisements under a competitive advertising environment. While existing literature has paid attention to the single effects of multi-spot advertisements, this study takes a comprehensive approach to the topic, including rival-benefiting effects along with attempts to give insights into advertising strategies. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve our purpose, we first developed the experiment stimuli utilizing printed advertisements of foreign companies. Next, we devised an experiment to compare the three groups of ‘exposure to multi-spot advertisements', ‘repetitive exposure to single advertisement', and ‘single exposure to single advertisements'. 214 experiment participants responded to the survey questionnaire after watching the printed advertisements. Results/findings: The results convey that the effects of advertisement were better for repetitive exposure to a single advertisement than a multispot advertisement under competitive advertising environment. Moreover, in terms of the effect on rival advertisement, the effects of multispot advertisement were higher than single advertisements. Research implications/limitations: This paper considered the multispot advertisement's effect on the rival advertisement as well as its originally intended effect under a competitive advertising environment. The results from this comprehensive approach provide practical implications for the firms' implementation of advertisement. Future work/research: While this study only examined the situational factors influencing the effects of multispot advertisement, we suggest that future research should pay attention to the influences of other factors such as brand, elements of advertisement and consumer characteristics. Originality/value: This study increased the external validities of research in advertisement studies by examining the effect of multispot advertisements under competitive environments. The results from our comprehensive approach, which includes situational factors of advertisement, provide practical implications for firms' advertising strategies.
