Abstract
Although it is generally known that a firm’s CSR activities creates market-based assets for the firm, a clear conclusion has not yet been reached on the effects of luxury brands’ CSR activities on consumer attitudes. This CSR-luxury paradox due to a conflict between self-indulgence of luxury brand and self-transcendence of CSR causes consumer confusion and skepticism about true motivations of luxury brands’ CSR engagement, which leads to negative evaluations of their CSR activities. Other studies argue that luxury brand’s CSR activities work for consumers as a factor to justify high price of the luxury goods. This study attempts to clarify the effects of luxury brand’s CSR activities on consumer attitudes by considering the influences of various attributes of brands and consumers. Specifically, it examines how the effects of CSR activities of luxury brands on consumers’ perceived price fairness differ by the brand’s luxury level (i.e. prestige vs. masstige) and consumers’ perceived price sensitivity to luxury goods. It was found that consumers with high price sensitivity perceive the CSR activity of the Masstige brand more positively in terms of price fairness than the CSR activity of the Prestige brand as depicted in the figure below. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
