Abstract
In an aging society, senior consumers are increasingly recognized as dynamic actors with evolving identities rather than as a homogeneous market segment. This study examines how changes among senior consumers extend beyond shifts in consumption behavior to involve transformations in consumer identity and subsequent expansions of consumer roles. Drawing on identity process theory, role transition theory, and a life-course perspective, the study conceptualizes senior consumers’ role change as a staged and evolutionary process that begins with shifts in external perceptions, progresses through the reconstruction of consumer identity, and extends toward social value creation. Based on this framework, the study proposes a Senior Consumer Role Evolution Model consisting of four phases and seven stages. Phase 1 captures a transition from passive to active consumers as external perceptions change. Phase 2 reflects the recognition of seniors’ activity and economic influence, leading to an expansion from active seniors to the Active Golden Generation. Phase 3 represents a pivotal identity transformation in which senior consumers redefine later life as a “second act” and establish a self-directed Neo-Youth identity centered on challenge, learning, and growth. Phase 4 illustrates how this internal transformation is externalized into social contribution, culminating in roles as veteran leaders and co-creators of social value. Importantly, the phases and stages are not deterministic or age-bound but represent analytical distinctions that may occur nonlinearly or in parallel depending on individuals’ consumption experiences and identity interpretations. By reconceptualizing senior consumers as role-based actors capable of social contribution, this study advances a new theoretical paradigm for senior marketing research.
