Abstract

Since 1949, continuous excavations at the tombs of Liudingshan have uncovered human remains from 65 tombs, 15 of which contain two or more individuals. These findings provide significant insight into the burial practices of early Balhae tombs. In particular, the phenomenon of exposing the bones of multiple individuals, known as “multi-person burial,” was initially understood as a unique characteristic of Balhae tombs. However, this phenomenon should not be regarded as a distinctive feature of Balhae’s burial system, as it resulted from the common practice of multiple burials in horizontal-entrance tombs, which were constructed with additional burials in mind after the late Three Kingdoms period. The artifacts excavated from the multi-burial tombs at Liudingshan date to the late 7th to early 8th century. Meanwhile, the burial practices and tomb construction methods closely resemble those of the Liaodong region and the Second Songhua River Basin in the late 7th century. Therefore, the burial practices observed at Liudingshan can be understood as the result of a fusion between the burial traditions of Goguryeo refugees, who maintained the custom of adding multiple burials to a single tomb, and those of the Malgal, who conducted simultaneous multi-burials. This tradition of “multi-person burial” is believed to have subsequently spread and continued in burial mound groups across different regions of Balhae.
