Abstract

This study examines costume-related artifacts excavated from the Yonghae(龍海) and Seokguk(石國) tomb groups within the Longtoushan Tomb Complex, as reported in 2025—specifically, the sancai human figurines from tombs M10 and M1B, and the headdress ornaments from tombs M14 and M1C. The findings are summarized as follows. First, both the headdress ornaments and Pibyeon(皮弁, leather headgear) reflect a transformative continuation of indigenous costume traditions. Variations are observed in the insertion methods of gold ornaments on the Byeonsang gwanmo(弁狀冠帽, conical hat) and in the ornamental motifs themselves. Moreover, the method of attaching and decorating the headdress evolved from a vertical insertion to a horizontal one, fixed from front to back. The structural composition of the Pibyeon also shows changes in planar form, and a new fastening technique—using multiple pins or rods inserted through small holes—was developed to secure it. Second, With the spread of new clothing cultures, active efforts were made to utilize various items in multiple ways when dressing. As these new modes of attire were introduced, men generally wore official garments such as the Danryeong(團領, roundcollared robes) and Bokdu(幞頭, headgear), while women typically adopted what became established as the “Southern–Northern States period(Balhae-Unified Silla, late 7th–10th centuries) style,” consisting of a short upper garment worn with a skirt, the skirt strings decorated with a chest band, and a Pyo(裱, draped shawl over the shoulders). However, an examination of this basic framework reveals that the clothing culture of the time was not confined to a single, fixed style but demonstrated a broad adaptability across society. This tendency is especially evident in women’s attire.
