Abstract
In this study, we examine the nature of negation especially denials in English discourse and suggest that a negation operator 'not' in truth-functional negation and in marked negation, which is called denial can be treated in the same way. To handle the problem, we employ a tool that can be applied to marked cases of negation as well as the truth-functional negation in a unified way. For this, we adopt the LDRT which is designed to represent and interpret different types of information conveyed in a conversation by distributing them over separate layers. This mechanism provides a means to formally interpret information that has been considered pragmatic and non-truth-conditional in nature, having the advantage of retaining a unified account of denials.
