Abstract

This paper examines modal subordination in English and Korean, and provides theoretical accounts for them. Korean also has modal subordination. But, unlike English, Korean may have modal subordination phenomena without any modal auxiliary verb. This paper claims that we have these phenomena only when some other information on the discourse contexts is presupposed, and analyzes them with different mechanisms that are used for modal subordination phenomena in English. In sum, this paper shows how modal subordination can be handled in Korean data.
