Abstract

This paper examines the characteristics of the formation process, migration motives, and history of the Korean community in Bulgaria, using the push-pull factors and migration system theory. Eight research participants from diverse backgrounds were selected and semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted. In addition, various primary and secondary sources, such as Korean association records and digital archives, were utilized. Though the Korean migration to Bulgaria started after the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1990, there have been ethnic Koreans living in the country at least since 1962. The latter, though originally North Korean, are considered the progenitors of the contemporary Korean diaspora in Bulgaria. This research focuses on the migration of South Korean citizens to the country. The research found that Korean religious organizations play a fundamental role in the creation of a community and the formation of interpersonal networks. At the meso level, these organizations were found to play an intermediary role in providing newcomers with channels for migration to Bulgaria. The research also found that the immigrants were motivated by micro-level factors such as the desire for a higher social status and the pursuit of a life free from social competition. By elucidating the unique migration and community formation process of Koreans in Bulgaria, this study is expected to provide new insights into international migration research.
