Abstract
To stop oscillating between a pair of unsatisfying positions, the appeal to the Givenand the appeal to the coherentism, McDowell offers an epistemological proposal thatcan be considered as minimally empiricist. His proposal is a notion of experience- appearings - that has a conceptualized character and can serve as a justificationfor our beliefs. In this paper, I shall claim that McDowell's notion of experience is fundamentallymistaken. First of all, his notion of experience cannot avoid the difficulty of thecoherentism which he criticizes. And even though his notion of experience partiallysolves some of the problems rasied against the myth of the Given, that cannot offera justification for our beliefs. Second, his notion of experience will be not a rightinsight to our perceptual experience, and his enterprise that tries to make a directroute to the world by this notion of experience will be not a adequate response toskepticism.
