통일과 평화를 위한 학교에 대한 고찰: 느베샬롬 평화학교 사례를 중심으로

Abstract

Research on Korean reunification has been considering several related international cases such as Germany, Vietnam and Yemen. While the analysis of these cases has provided meaningful implications to the consideration of Korean issues, it must be admitted that there cannot be a case with exactly the same situation and issues as the Korean one. Then it would be always better to consider as more cases as possible in drawing empirical implications from international experiences. This article examines the case of Neve Shalom and their school for peace as additional international cases that can shed more meaningful light on the Korean case. A village where both Israeli and Palestinians live together, Neve Shalom, along with the school for peace within the village, has received international attention as a place of co-existence among the peoples with conflict. This article examines this case and presents two particular implications: first, education can be a powerful tool for peace building as young students without deeply rooted hatred can easily learn how to establish peaceful human relationship, and second, if building such a school is possible in the Middle East, there can be still hope for such a project in the Korean peninsula.
