이 글은 C. S. 루이스의 나니아 시리즈 중 나니아의 창조와 악의 유입을 다루는 The Magician’s Nephew(『마법사의 조카』)에 관한 연구다. 특히 이 아슬란(하나님/그리스도)에 대한 순종과 배반이라는 이 작품의 기본 주제를 따라가면서, 저자가 믿는 성서적 세계관이 그의 상상적 작품 속에 어떤 식으로 형상화되는지 살펴보는 것이 목적이다. 먼저 성서의 진리와 이에 대한 상상적 구현의 문제를 원론적으로 논의한 후(들어가는 말), 성서와 『마법사』라는 두 텍스트에서 절대자의 주권과 인간의 자유가 맞물리며 순종과 배반의 역동이 생겨나는 양상을 살펴본다(I). 그 다음, 열린 믿음과 복종으로 아슬란에게 다가가는 인물들을 다룬다. 여기서는 자기애에 몰입하지 않고 열린 시선으로 주변 세계에 반응하는 모습(1)과 그 세계 배후의 창조주를 기뻐하며 영접하는 모습(2), 그리고 절대자와의 관계 속에서 피조물 본연의 위상을 회복하는 모습(3)을 살핀다. 그 다음엔 창조주를 거부하는 태도를 분석한다(III). 선한 창조계의 불청객으로서의 악의 속성을 논한 후(1), 악의 본질이 창조주를 거부하고 자기를 주장하려는 교만이라는 사실(2), 그리고 이 교만이 타인을 향한 무관심과 폭력으로 드러나는 양상을 살펴본다(3). 다음 단원에서는 인간의 불순종(죄)와 그 파괴적 결과(벌)을 다룬다(IV). 인간의 잘못된 선택이 비극적 결과로 귀결될 수밖에 없다는 사실과(1), 한 개인의 자유로운 선택이 야기하는 파괴적 결과로서의 타락의 양상을 살펴본다(2). 마지막으로 개인의 운명과 창조주를 향한 태도의 중요성 및 본 논문이 다른 범위의 한계를 언급한다(나가는 말).
Abstract
This is a study of The Magician’s Nephew, one of The Chronicles of Narnia series by C. S. Lewis. It traces the biblical motif of obedience and rebellion in the book with a view to understand how biblical truths are portrayed in this work of imagination. The study begins with a brief introduction about how the author’s fictional works relate to his biblical convictions. It then discusses the problem of divine omnipotence and human free will, along with the consequent drama of obedience and rebellion, as portrayed both in the Bible and the Nephew (I). The next section (II) discusses those who are free from excessive obsession with one self and, therefore, respond to reality with their heart and mind wide open (1). These characters welcome the presence of Aslan/God-Christ(2) and are transformed and grow to attain fuller humanity (3). The study then turns to the opposite side, to those who reject God and His creation (III). After discussing the alien nature of evil (1), it examines the sin of Pride, the creature’s rejection of God in a desperate attempt to assert one’s own will (2) and how such Pride expresses itself in cruel indifference toward others (3). The last major section (IV) looks at the self-willed nature of sin and its fatal consequences: the way the wrong decision leads to its ultimate consequences (1), and the somber fact that such enslavement is essentially of one’s own making (2). The study concludes with a summary comment on the importance of one’s standpoint as the deciding factor between obedience and rebellion, and a note on the limit of the study.
