가치관을 통해 본 한국인의 문화적 정체성: 유교와 무교를 중심으로

문화적 정체성은 자신의 고유한 문화에 기반한 개인의 정체성이나 특정한 공동체의 소속의식이다. 그것은 국가 및 민족, 종교 단체, 성(性), 심지어 세대일 수도 있다. 개인에게 문화적 정체성은 특정 공동체를 사회적으로 결집하는 원천이다. 공동체의 일원이 공유한 문화, 즉 언어, 종교, 전통, 관습 등은 정체성 및 일치감, 결집과 집합의식을 제공한다. 한국인의 문화적 정체성은 무엇인가? 문화를 구성하는 수많은 요소 가운데 한국인의 문화적 정체성을 이해하는 데 가장 중요한 것은 무엇일까? 이에 대한 해답은 한국인의 철학, 종교, 문학, 예술, 음악, 심지어 음식 등을 통해 추론할 수 있다. 그러나 이 논문은 한국인의 문화적 정체성의 핵심을 한국인의 가치관으로 보고 논의를 진행한다. 특히 본고는 무교와 유교에서 기인하는 한국인의 가치관을 고찰한다. 왜냐하면 두 종교의 주요한 가치들인 현세성, 점과 운세, 효, 조상숭배, 집합주의, 교육, 수직적 위계 강조 등은 여전히 한국인의 문화적 정체성 형성에 지대한 영향을 미치고 있기 때문이다. 한국문화의 가장 중요한 보고(寶庫)인 무교와 유교의 전통적 가치들은 한국인의 특징, 세계관, 사고방식 그리고 집합의식을 정의하는 전통적인 사고와 행동 패턴을 드러낸다. 따라서 이 논문은 한국인의 가치관에 관한 여러 데이터뿐만 아니라 관련 문헌들을 통해서 한국인의 가치관을 탐구한다.
Abstract
Cultural identity is a person’s identity or sense of belonging to a particular group that has its own distinct culture, be it a nation, ethnic group, religious group, gender or even generation. For the individual, cultural identity is a source of social cohesion in a specific group, as the culture that is shared by its members, i.e., language, religion, tradition, customs as well as history of the group, provides them with a sense of identity, unity, bond, and togetherness. The question is: What is Korean cultural identity? Out of the vast array of elements that constitute culture, which one is the most important in understanding Korean cultural identity? Answers to the latter question may be inspired by insights from Korean philosophy, religion, literature, art, music or even food, but this paper argues that it is Korean values which form the core of Korean cultural identity. In particular, the paper argues that Korean values which derive from shamanism and Confucianism, such as this-worldliness, belief in fortune-telling, filial piety, ancestor worship, collectivism, education, and emphasis on hierarchy, still exert a strong influence on shaping Korean cultural identity. As the most important repository of Korean culture, the values of these two traditional religions reveal the time-honored patterns of thought and behavior that still define the Korean character, their worldview, mindset and collective consciousness. These values also bring to light the ideals with which how they make sense of the world and their lives. In exploring the Korean values-cultural identity nexus, the paper refers to the relevant literature as well as various survey data on Korean values.
