종교와 경제 관계 연구의 새로운 모색: 종교윤리·영성적 접근

초록

본고는 종교와 경제 관계 이론을 살펴보고, 종교윤리와 영성을 중심으로 기업의 이해관계자, 그중 근로자들의 경제적 삶에서의 종교의 역할을 탐색하기 위해 시도되었다. 최근 종교와 경제학 모두 일상에 초점을 두어야 한다는 변화를 보여주고 있어, 종교를 경제성장이 아닌 일상을 중시하는 경제학적 측면에서 접근할 때 기업윤리에서 종교윤리를 배제하는 것은 위험하다는 주장이 제기된 바 있다. 기업에서 요구되는 종교윤리는 이해관계자들과의 종교적 대화, 관리자의 막중한 책임의식, 기업주의 약속 실천 등이 핵심 요인이다. 특히 기업윤리에 대한 경험론과 규범론은 통합하기 어려운 서로의 거리를 유지하고 있는데, 종교가 그 거리를 극복할 수 있다고 본다. 다음, 경제에서의 영성은 “삶의 궁극적인 목적을 찾고, 그에 따라 살고자 하는 욕망”으로 정의된다. 비즈니스 영성의 공통적인 특징은 보편적 사회적 연대, 세상에 대한 봉사, 가난한 사람들에게 유리한 편견, 자제하는 경향의 네 가지로 요약되기도 하거니와, 이것은 경제에서의 영성이 삶에 기반하는 현실적이고 정의로움을 지향하는 것임을 의미한다. 진정한 영성의 중심에는 취약성, 온화함, 겸손이 있는데, 취약성의 영성과 특히 양립할 수 없는 것은 강인함이 아니라 ‘성공 정신’으로, 종교기반 기업 중에는 일부 이러한 이론에서 제시된 종교의 역할보다 성공에 더 중점을 두기도 한다. 비록 종교윤리와 영성은 기업의 이윤 창출에 즉각적인 기여가 어렵지만, 경제를 뒷받침하는 근로자들의 삶에서 변화를 보여주는 간접적이고 장기적인 역할을 한다는 점에서 기업이 숙고해서 활용할만한 새로운 길이 될 것으로 판단된다.

Abstract

This paper aims at examining the theory of religion and economic relations, and exploring the role of religion in the economic life of corporate stakeholders, especially workers, focusing on religious ethics and spirituality. Recently, it has been argued that it is dangerous to exclude religious ethics from corporate ethics when approaching religion from an economic perspective that values daily life rather than economic growth. Religious ethics required by companies are key factors such as religious conversations with stakeholders, managers' heavy sense of responsibility, and CEO's practice of promises. In particular, empirical and normative theories on corporate ethics maintain a distance from each other, which is difficult to integrate, and religion will be able to overcome that distance. Next, spirituality in the economy is defined as “the desire to find ultimate purpose in life, and to live accordingly.” The common characteristics of business spirituality are often summarized into four categories: universal social solidarity, service to the world, prejudice in favor of the poor, and a tendency to refrain. This means that spirituality in the economy is real in life and aims for justice. At the heart of true spirituality is vulnerability, gentleness, and humility, and what is particularly incompatible with the spirit of vulnerability is considered "the spirit of success," not toughness. Some religious-based companies emphasize the spirit of success more than the role of religion suggested in some of these theories. Religious ethics and spirituality are difficult to contribute immediately to the generation of corporate profits, but they are expected to be a new way for companies to make use of them with deep consideration in that they play an indirect and long-term role in showing changes in the lives of workers who support the economy.
