Abstract

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology necessitates a reconsideration of the concept of human dignity. This study explores the potential significance of the doctrine of incarnation as a theological foundation for human dignity in the AI era. First, this research critically examines existing interpretations of the Imago Dei. The substantive approach, which identifies God's image with specific human capacities, is weakened by AI's progression. The relational approach emphasizes human relationships but raises questions about the dignity of those unable to form relationships. The functional approach focuses on human roles but problematizes the value of those unable to fulfill these roles. After analyzing these limitations, this study argues that the doctrine of incarnation can overcome these constraints and offer new insights into the discourse on human dignity in the AI age. The incarnation affirms the intrinsic value of human beings while acknowledging human limitations and vulnerabilities. This holds particular significance as AI surpasses human capabilities in many domains. The author emphasizes that human dignity stems not from productivity, functionality, or ethical capacity, but from the ontological fact that God the Son incarnated as a human being rather than any other creature. Furthermore, the doctrine of incarnation illuminates the paradoxical nature and teleological significance of human existence, while acknowledging the value of human diversity. However, this study also cautions against excessive anthropocentrism. Considering the cosmic implications of the incarnation, it stresses that emphasizing human dignity should not result in disregarding the inherent value of other creatures. In conclusion, the concept of human dignity based on the doctrine of incarnation provides a balanced perspective that reaffirms the unique value of humans in the AI era while recognizing humanity's place within the broader created order.
