Abstract
This study aims to reinterpret the community health nursing practices of missionary Elizabeth J. Shepping from the perspective of community health nursing and to explore academic strategies and practical directions for community health nursing education in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. As a conceptual paper, this study employs Shepping’s service-oriented spirit as an interpretive framework, integrating a historical review of her records with a case analysis of Hanil University’s community health nursing curriculum. By examining Shepping’s reports and activity records, this study identifies key characteristics of early community health nursing—such as home visiting care, maternal and child health, public hygiene, advocacy for vulnerable populations, and the establishment of international nursing networks—highlighting her comprehensive orientation toward population health, health equity, and global cooperation. Furthermore, through an analysis of Hanil University’s curricular and co-curricular programs, including Shepping and Social Service, Health Promotion and Education, theoretical and clinical courses in community health nursing, industrial nursing practicums, and participation in the Nurses’ Act legislation movement, this study demonstrates how Shepping’s motto, “Not Success, But Service,” has been embodied in teaching, practice, and policy engagement. Integrating recent domestic and international discussions on aging society and integrated community care, digital health transformation, service-learning, policy advocacy and political competency, global health, and global citizenship, this paper proposes future directions for community health nursing education. Specifically, it underscores the need to systematize core competencies encompassing integrated care, digital health, policy advocacy, and global health; to strengthen community partnership–based service-learning; and to develop educational content related to primary health care and digital health. Through these efforts, the legacy of Shepping’s service-oriented spirit can be creatively and practically advanced within community health nursing education in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.
