오늘날 한국 교회는 신앙적으로 본질을 잃어버리면서 복음의 선포와 실천에 대한 많은도전을 받고 있다. 이런 상황에서 요청되는 것은 복음의 의미를 돌아보고 기독교적 실천을회복하는 일인데 기독교를 상징하는‘사랑과 섬김’으로 되돌아가는 것이 그에 대한 해답이 될 수 있겠다. 이런 맥락에서 본 논문은 최근 들어 섬김의 사역으로 재조명 되고 있는 선교사 서서평이 펼친 교육사역과 관련한 특징과 요소들을 고찰해 봄으로써 우리 시대에 던지는 기독교교육적 도전과 방향을 모색해보고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 크게 본 논문은 네 부분으로 구성되어 있는데, 첫째 부분은 서서평이 수학할 당시의상황을 교육적 관점에서 본 역사적 배경을 다룬다. 두 번째 부분은 서서평이 받은 신학교육의 배경과 그녀의 스승의 학문적 사상 및 업적에 관한 것이며, 세 번째 부분은 서서평이한국에서 펼친 교육사역의 특징을 살펴보고 이런 순환적 과정을 통해 현대 기독교교육에주는 함의를 검토해 보고 제안하는 것이 마지막 부분이다.
Abstract
Today, Korean church is challenged in the proclamation of the Gospel and its practice due to the loss of essence of faith. What is demanded in this context is to reflect on the meaning of the Gospel and recover Christian practices. A response to this situation would be returning to ‘love and serving’ which symbolize Christianity. The purpose of this article is to explore the challenge and direction toward the current Christian Education by examining characteristics and elements related to the educational mission of Elizabeth J. Shepping, whose servant leadership and mission are recently re-evaluated among scholars and lay people. Largely, this article consists of four parts. The first part deals with historical background of the context where Shepping was at school from an educational point of view. The second part is about theological education that Shepping had received. The third part examines an educational mission which Shepping practiced in Korea. Through this spiral process, the last task is a dynamic exploration of challenge and proposal for Christian Education.
